Complacency, Politics And India's COVID-19 Second Wave Catastrophe

On May 6, 2021, India recorded an all-time high of 414,188 COVID-19 infections. As the nation deals with the catastrophic second wave of the pandemic, many accuse the government of complacency in containing the spread of the coronavirus.

In March 2020, India imposed one of the world’s most aggressive lockdowns. This early response to check the first wave of COVID-19 infections garnered praise from the World Health Organisation. Case numbers declined and by October 2020, citizens were organising large-scale events like weddings again.

In March 2021, political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held rallies that drew large, unmasked crowds and ignored social distancing. That same month, millions gathered in Haridwar to celebrate Kumbha Mela, a month-long religious festival, while the more infectious B.1.617, also known as the Delta variant, multiplied in cities like Maharashtra.

A second wave of cases gathered momentum, and India’s healthcare system was unable to cope – hospitals were turning away those in need due to a shortage of beds and medical supplies like oxygen cylinders.
