Alberta’s chief public health officer, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, reported on Thursday a total of 1,625 new cases of COVID-19 as the Omicron variant spreads across provinces.

She said the province’s positivity rate is standing at 13.6 per cent, with about 11,800 tests completed in the past 24 hours from her report.

No deaths were reported due to COVID-19 in Alberta on Thursday.

Hinshaw said public health units have seen a significant uptick in booster shots since the province expanded eligibility.

The Omicron variant is spreading much faster than Delta in Alberta, with doubling times of just two to three days. Because of that, contact tracing case investigations for people working in continuing care and health-care will be prioritized and PCR testing capacity will be reserved for high risk groups.
