Watch a simulation of the deadly Uttarakhand disaster | Science News
This animation shows the progress of the avalanche, as it rushes downslope toward the two hydroelectric dams at Tapovan. Colors show which material was dominant in the avalanche as it flows. At the start, where the avalanche is colored red, it was mostly (about 80 percent) rock and 20 percent ice. Green is mostly ice, as the rocks begin to splash or settle out. By the time the flow reached Tapovan, it had become mostly water (blue).
